It can be difficult to absorb the immensity of the ancient trees in Redwood National and State Parks under any circumstance, but doing so from the seat of a car is near-impossible. Fortunately, the coastal California park will offer four opportunities, starting Saturday, for visitors to enjoy the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park without the noise of cars and trucks.
Visitors can explore the 10-mile corridor through the heart of old-growth redwood forest by foot, bicycle, skateboard, rollerblades or any other non-motorized vehicle. Leashed dogs are welcome on the parkway but are prohibited on the trails. Much of the southern end of the parkway is relatively flat, while the hills of the northern portion require more effort and expertise. There are numerous trailheads along the route.
The road will be closed to motorized vehicles the first Saturday of the month from February to May:

* March 5
* April 2
* May 7
The Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway parallels Highway 101 between Klamath and Orick, California. During the closure, access to the Elk Prairie Campground and Prairie Creek Visitor Center will remain open. Parking is available at the southern entrance in designated spaces parallel to the roadway and adjacent to Elk Prairie on the road to the campground.
