Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts is working with a local art gallery to honor the National Park Service Centennial with an art exhibit intended to celebrate the national parks.

Park staff along with the Brush Art Gallery and Studios are seeking entries of contemporary art for a juried exhibit to be held at the Brush Art Gallery in Lowell from May 7 through June 10. Artists are being invited to help commemorate the visionaries who came before the current generations, their groundbreaking ideas, the amazing places the National Park Service manages, and the powerful and significant stories they collectively tell.

"Storytelling has been a part of our shared cultural heritage for generations. It brings people together, imprints pictures on the minds, and fosters meaningful connections with history, culture, and the natural world around us," a park release said. "The unique treasures that make up our beloved national parks are as diverse as we are; from historic homes, battlefields, majestic mountains, and solemn cemeteries to bustling urban centers, canalways, recreation areas, and seashores. This rich variety has created a portfolio of over 400 parks."

In response to the National Park Service Centennial Find Your Park campaign, park staff is seeking artworks that illustrate these unique stories, whether they are specifically about place, the people and events they commemorate, or the artist's personal connection and experience in any one of the national park areas.

"The national park sites offer the ultimate stimulus for creative expression," said the park release, "so show us what Telling American Stories: Celebrating 100 Years of the National Park Service means to you!"

The schedule for the exhibit is as follows:

* February 10 – April 1, 2016: Open period for artist submissions

* May 7 – June 10, 2016: Exhibition dates

* June 5, 2016: Public reception for artists

Interested artists can submit up to three images for consideration for the open period (February 10 – April 1, 2016). All entries must be submitted online and received no later than 11:50 p.m. Friday, April 1. No late entries will be accepted. For entry forms and detailed information, visit http://www.lowellartshows.com/NPS.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
