Visiting Cape Hatteras this summer? Climb Bodie Island Lighthouse after dark./NPS

With the summer season getting into full swing at Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout national seashores, the parks have released their schedules for planned nighttime climbs of lighthouses in their parks.

Grab your flashlight and experience a lighthouse at night by joining the National Park Service on a Full Moon Climb at the Cape Hatteras or Bodie Island Lighthouse this summer. Hear stories of keepers of old, view the working light close up in the lantern room, and catch the reflection off the Atlantic Ocean of the newly-risen full moon as you stand on the lighthouse balcony. Tickets to climb are required.

Tickets for the Full Moon Climbs must be purchased in advance and are non-refundable. Ticket sales will start the day of the climb and can be purchased at the Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island Lighthouse ticket desks. You must purchase your ticket at the site where you wish to climb. A limited number of tickets sell fast for each tour. Tickets are $8 per adult, and $4 for children (11 and under) and seniors (62 and older).

2015 Full Moon Tours will take place on:

* Wednesday, July 1 at 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

* Friday, July 31 at 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

* Saturday, August 29 at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

* Sunday, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Children joining the climb must be at least 42-inches tall and must climb the steps on their own'”they cannot be carried. Also, keep in mind that some youngsters may not enjoy the dimly lit, sometimes claustrophobic environment. Children 11 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult (16 or older).

Prior to purchasing tickets, consider your own limitations and those of your group. The lighthouse is tall, dark, often hot and humid, and can be a challenge to climb. There is no air conditioning or internal lights. The climb may be weather dependent.

At Cape Lookout National Seashore just south of Hatteras, superintendent Patrick M. Kenney said the opportunity to climb Cape Lookout Lighthouse after sunset will be offered on select dates near the full moon during the months of June, July, August, September and October.

Reservations for an Evening at Cape Lookout Lighthouse on June 4, 5 and 6 may be made by calling 252-725-9373 between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. . Reservations for each of the other evening programs will be accepted the week prior to each month'™s dates.

The cost of the program is $23 per person (price includes ferry fee) and is non-refundable (weather dependent). Reservations are required. There will be one evening ferry trip on each date for all the climbs on that night; the ferry will depart Harkers Island at 7:30 p.m. and return at about 10 p.m.

Children joining the climb must be at least 44-inches tall and able to climb the steps on their own. Children 12 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an adult (16 or older). Footwear is required as well. For more information about climbing the lighthouse go to: http://go.nps.gov/lighthouse
