If you're in central Colorado this coming weekend, consider visiting Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument on Saturday to catch a glimpse of meteors slicing across the night skies.
Saturday is expected to be the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower, which is known for a modest number of shooting stars but a high percentage of extra-bright "fireball" meteors, according to park staff. Along with watching for meteors, the staff will have a number of telescopes for use in searching the skies for star clusters, galaxies, and more.
To join this event, meet at the park's Visitor Center at 8 p.m. Saturday. The program will begin with a 20-30 minute interpretive talk inside the center, and then head outside for 90 minutes of stargazing with telescopes, binoculars, and laser-guided tours of the stars and constellations.
The outdoor aspect of this event is weather-dependent, and so will take place only if the sky is clear. Indoor presentations will take place no matter the weather. Dress appropriately for Colorado's December night weather, and bring binoculars or a flashlight if you want, though red-filtered lights only.
Admission for the program is the regular park entrance fee which is $3 per adult (16 years and older) children and federal pass holders are free. For additional information, you can reach the park staff at (719) 748-3253. The park is located in Florissant, Colorado, about 35 miles west of Colorado Springs.
