Park staff at the historic site will present special programs on three Sundays during the months of July and August. Activities will begin behind the park Visitor Center unless otherwise indicated. All programs are free of charge.

“You Can’t Take It With You…” Photo Safari Race

July 7th 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

You may not be able to take rocks or plants home with you from a national park, but you can take as many photographs as you would like. First and second place prizes will be given. The race begins promptly at 2 p.m. Experienced naturalist, Lois Lindberg, will lead a nature walk at 12 p.m. and a leaf rubbing activity will provide another souvenir from your day spent in nature. This event is sponsored in part by the Long Island Children’s Museum, Eastern National, and The Friends of Sagamore Hill.

The Spice is Right

July 28th 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. (Two programs will be offered)

Get acquainted with herbs and herb gardening with Michael Goudket, museum guide at Old Bethpage Village Restoration and designer of the Victorian herb garden at Raynham Hall Museum, Oyster Bay. There will be herbs to crush and sniff, and participants will take home a nifty fact sheet.

Poetry in Motion

August 11th 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Dr. Linda Opyr, Nassau County Poet Laureate 2011-13, will lead a poetry workshop on the grounds of Sagamore Hill. Participants should bring a pen and notebook, and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. The workshop is open to individuals 12 years of age and older. No prior experience is necessary. Participants should meet at the Theodore Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard. Should inclement weather prevail, the workshop will be held in the Theodore Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard.
