South Entrance To Yellowstone National Park Opens

The early birds were ready and waiting this morning when the South Entrance to Yellowstone National Park opened for the season.

At least 10 vehicles were waiting in line at the entrance gate when it was opened at 8 a.m. by Ranger Pat Burk.

Despite the budget sequestration that has sliced millions of dollars off national park budgets, the South Entrance opened as originially scheduled thanks to fundraising support from the gateway communities of Jackson, Wyoming, and Cody, Wyoming, that allowed the Wyoming Department of Transportation to help with clearing snow from the park's roads.

In addition, the section of US-212 outside the park’s Northeast Entrance between Cooke City, Mont., and the intersection of WY-296 (the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway) also opened for the season on Friday morning.
