Booker T. Washington National Monument recently published a calendar of events for the current year. July has been declared Junior Ranger Month during which the monument’s rangers will offer activities each Wednesday and Saturday at 10 a.m.
Other scheduled events for 2013 include:
May 12 (3 p.m.) - Mother’s Day Mother-Daughter Tea including details of Booker T. Washington’s tea with Queen Victoria. Preregistration required.
May 25 – 27 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) - Memorial Day Living History Weekend depicting life for residents of Civil War-era tobacco plantation.
June 3 – 5 - Civil War 150 History Mobile - a traveling interactive exhibit about the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
June 15 (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.) - Juneteenth Special Event with gospel music, interpretive programs, and children’s activities
July 4 – 7 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) - Independence Day Living History Weekend depicting life for residents of a Civil War-era tobacco plantation.
August 31 – September 2 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) - Labor Day Living History Weekend depicting life for residents of a Civil War-era tobacco plantation.
September 21 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) - Harvest Time of 1863 with an interpretation of harvest time on a Virginia tobacco plantation. Includes craft demonstrations, wagon rides, music, and children’s activities.
December 7 (TBA) - An Old Virginia Christmas Special Event depicting how Christmas was celebrated by free and enslaved residents of the plantation. Includes entertainment and light refreshments.
